Can Power Plate help me lose weight?
The short answer is yes!
In fact, an important study published in Obesity Facts Journal demonstrated that whole body vibration (Power Plate) was better than traditional exercise at reducing visceral adipose tissue (1).
Visceral adipose tissue is the fat that is around your organs. The amount of visceral adipose tissue present is an important indicator in your overall health and disease outcomes (less is better!)
“And most importantly, visceral adipose tissue (VAT) changed most in the Power Plate group compared to all other groups, including the traditional exercise group.”
D. Vissers and his colleagues conducted a randomized controlled trial with 79 participants where they compared four groups:
a CONTROL group (no intervention),
a DIET group (changes in diet, no exercise),
a FITNESS (diet plus exercise) group (traditional exercise), and a
a VIBRATION (diet + whole body vibration) group (Power Plate)
While all three of the intervention groups lost significant weight compared to the control group, only the two groups that exercised along with diet changes were able to maintain a weight loss of 5% or more over 6 months. And most importantly, visceral adipose tissue (VAT) changed most in the Power Plate group compared to all other groups, including the traditional exercise group. Those in the vibration group maintained a VAT loss of – 47 cm2 (± 41.2cm2) after 12 months compared to the fitness group who had only – 1.6 cm2 (± 33.3 cm2) after 12 months and +26.3 cm2 (± 30.6 cm2) in the control group. (p < 0.001).
What does this all mean? Combining whole body vibration training with a healthy diet can help achieve sustained weight loss of 5–10%, and whole body vibration has the potential to reduce visceral fat more than standard aerobic exercise. (1)
“10 weeks of WBVT [whole body vibration training] produced significant weight/fat mass reduction, leg strength improvements as resistance training, and enhanced glucose regulation when added to hypocaloric diet.”(2)
A systematic review of 18 additional studies that looked at the effects of whole body vibration on weight loss demonstrated that “10 weeks of WBVT [whole body vibration training] produced significant weight/fat mass reduction, leg strength improvements as resistance training, and enhanced glucose regulation when added to hypocaloric diet.”(2)
