Inflammation is a part of our immune system’s response to injury or infection. Inflammation that occurs in healthy tissue or lasts too long, however, can be harmful.
What causes inflammation?
Lots of things! “A review of scientific literature conducted by NIEHS-funded researchers affiliated with the National Toxicology Program found(1)” the following:
Pollutants and environmental chemicals (including allergies)
Viruses and bacteria
Acute injuries
Chronic diseases, such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and depression
Certain foods
Poor gut microbiome
Stress, disrupted sleep, artificial light, and other things that hamper our immune system (2)
So what can we do?
Change our diet.
Harvard Medical School (3) shares that refined foods, processed meats, sodas, and fried foods can contribute to inflammation and should be avoided. Foods that help lower inflammation include fruits, tomatoes, nuts, leafy greens, olive oil, and fatty fish.
Get active.
Contracting our muscles (i.e. working out) releases proteins into our body that can reduce inflammation.
Improve our immune system.

“Whole-body vibration (WBV) exercise is a type of physical exercise that can act on inflammation responses due its capacity for stimulating the sensory components that promote systemic responses.”(4)
Several studies have demonstrated the positive effects of whole body vibration on reducing inflammation, including in patients with diabetes (5), elderly patients (6), and those with parkinsons (7) or fibromyalgia (8). In fact, one study found “a single acute session of mild and short WBV [whole body vibration] can improve the inflammatory status in patients with [fibromyalgia], reaching values close to those of matched [healthy women] at their basal status. The neuroendocrine mechanism seems to be an exercise-induced modulation towards greater adaptation to stress response in these patients.” (8) One short session of whole body vibration brought inflammation levels back to healthy levels for women with fibromyalgia! Wow!

Another study showed that whole body vibration can actually improve your gut microbiome 17 fold. Yes, 17-fold! The study was conducted on mice. “The rodents received 20 minutes of WBV [whole body vibration] each day of the week for 4 weeks. The WBV had a frequency of 30 Hz and an amplitude of 3 mm. After the 4 weeks had ended, the team collected and analyzed the rodents’ adipose [fat] tissue…and assessed the rodents’ microbiomes by examining their stool…The bacterium [that increased] goes by the name of Alistipes, and its role is to raise levels of short-chain fatty acids — compounds that lower inflammation in the gut. Previous research has found low levels of the bacterium in people with Crohn’s disease and inflammatory bowel disease, explain the researchers.”(9, 10)

It is known that PEMF (Bemer) sessions can reduce inflammation. A 2019 study set out to understand whether PEMF therapy can improve inflammation and tissue regeneration at the cellular level. They state “Our studies included herein confirm anti-inflammatory effects of PEMF on MSCs and MΦ(11).” In simpler terms, yes, PEMF therapy reduces inflammation at the cellular level.
Researchers are still studying the exact mechanism at the cellular level that is responsible for this. A 2015 study published in the Journal of Inflammation Research aimed to answer this question. “Based on our results,” the researchers say, “we propose a model in which PEMF therapy may promote chronic inflammation resolution by mediating gene expression changes important for inhibiting and resolving inflammation.”(12) If that all sounds a little too scientific, you can stop here.
